Palestinian leader Ahmad Sa’adat, General Secretary of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, has announced that he will join the collective prisoners’ open hunger strike this Sunday, July 31, to demand freedom for his comrade Bilal Kayed, on his 45th day of hunger strike. Bilal Kayed, a leader within the prisons for the 14.5 years of his imprisonment, launched a hunger strike on June 15; instead of being released as scheduled after the expiration of his sentence, he was ordered to an indefinitely-renewable six months of administrative detention. Hundreds of his comrades and the entire Palestinian Prisoners’ Movement, across all political lines, have joined a series of escalating steps of protest and a growing open-ended hunger strike to demand Bilal Kayed’s freedom. The Campaign to Free Ahmad Sa’adat is among over 150 Palestinian and international organizations that have signed a call for Kayed’s release, as protests grow internationally and throughout Palestine in support of his hunger strike.
The Campaign to Free Ahmad Sa’adat urges all support for Bilal Kayed’s hunger strike and the struggle of all Palestinian prisoners for freedom. We salute the leadership of Ahmad Sa’adat and Bilal Kayed, and their fellow struggling prisoners within the prisons of the occupation, leading not only the struggle to free Palestinian prisoners, but the struggle for the liberation of Palestine and its people.
